  • Head Superior- The “President” of each Quadrant; It is the Head’s job to run their Quadrant
  • Minor Superior- The “Vice President” of each Quadrant; It is the Minor’s job to take over in the event that the Head becomes wounded, ill, or is killed. Other than that, it’s a precautionary role. It is filled by the eldest child or next eldest sibling (if they don’t have children) of the Head Superior
  • Base Superiors- The Advisors of the Head; Two adults from separate families fill this position
  • Most Eligible Base Superior- The Base who is next in line for the Head Superior-ship after the Minor; Most Eligible Bases are designated based on both marital status, and the age of their children. For instance, both may have children, but the title of Most Eligible goes to whoever’s eldest is the oldest. The title can also be obtained even if neither Base has children. If one Base is married, and the other is widowed (such is the case in Rise and Fall), the title goes to the one who is married, because there is a possibility that they would have children. Even if they do not, this still works out, because usually the Base of the moment inherited the position from a parent when they die. Because of this, even if they themselves die, and do not have a successor (their own child), the next eldest child of the original Base (their late parent) would assume the position.
  • Head of the Superior Army- The one who oversees everything related to the army (“Commander in Chief”)
  • Recruits- Any sons of the Head of the Superior Army
  • Spectators- Any members of the four families of the government who do not have a specific title

Full Summary/General Plot as I explained it to a friend

OKAY, so, my book is about a kid named Alek Thoreaut. He lives in a society called Parity. Parity is split into four quadrants, each named for a season, and each assigned its corresponding element. It’s not sci-fy weird shit where they all have powers and shit. The element thing is more closely related to war tactics, and a law that states that during each season, if a war were to occur, all those involved can only use the element prevalent to the season that it is. So if it’s summer, you can only fight using weapons that utilize fire/all things related. Bombs, guns, full on torches. Things like that. Each quadrant has their own government system, and all four branches run Parity together, with the most power at any given point going to the season whose season it actually is. The government is that for each quadrant, there is a Head Superior, a Minor Superior (which is the Head’s eldest child), and two Base Superiors. The Base Superiors are from two separate families than the Head and Minor. There is a Most Eligible Base Superior, and just the normal Base Superior. You get the title of Most Eligible when you either have kids, and your eldest is older than the eldest of the other Base, or if you have kids and the other doesn’t, or if one happens to be married, but doesn’t have kids, they can still be Most Eligible if the other is widowed, because there’s at least a possibility that they could have kids. So, the basis of the story is that the Summer quadrant decides to torch the Fall quadrant (where Alek lives), and he escapes. Summer is hunting him down because of a pass of power that occurred when they killed the Head Superior of Fall. This part is kind of complicated, so I’ll go into it, because it’s kind of the most important part of the story. Without it, there’d be no story. Okay, so before Summer decided to kill everyone, Fall’s government consisted of their Head Superior (Caldwell Barett), his son (Haven Barett), and the two Base Superiors (Mercer Holden, and Cassandra Parker). When Summer torched the place, they killed Caldwell, and Cassandra. Since Caldwell was the Head, usually power is passed to the Minor Superior. In this case, however, it did not because Haven is only like nine years old. So he went into hiding with the widowed Mercer Holden, and Cassandra Parker (Most Eligible Base Superior) became the Head Superior. Summer killed her as well, and since her father (Adamn Vitale) was the original Base in her family line, and passed down his power to her when he died, and she has no children, the title of Head Superior passes to Adamn’s next eldest child. His next eldest was Maria Vitale, who was remarried as Maria Thoreaut, and who is Alek’s mother. SHE was ALSO killed in the invasion, and because she has children, the title of Head Superior shifts to HER eldest child. Alek is her eldest child. Alek is the new Head Superior of Fall. When he’s escaping with his uncle, he loses hold of his younger brother-Keyne- and he believes that Summer has him. They do, he just doesn’t know it for sure. Keyne is the Minor Superior of Fall (since Alek has no children, it goes down the family line until he does) and since Summer wants to obliterate one season at a time, they’re using him as a bargaining chip to kill Alek. SO. Alek has about ten million emotional problems from seeing everyone he knows die around him, and from being completely swallowed by guilt of losing his brother. He survives, and is in hiding, until Grant (his uncle) comes back to check on him and accidentally leads Summer right to him. Alek escapes again, and Grant “sacrifices” himself to create a diversion (I haven’t decided if I’m killing him yet or not. I probably won’t. I’d feel bad.). Alek gets picked up by the Minor Superior of Winter (Sasha Christofer) and is informed that they’ve created a resistance to fight Summer. He meets a lot of other refugees and recruits (basically other important teenagers with whom he becomes allies and friends with) and they have to get back to the Winter House (the capitol, basically, of the Winter Quadrant. Each season has a House.) So they do all that, and there’s all these sub-plots (Alek and Sasha falling in love, etc), and basically the whole rest of the story is all the things he has to do to get ready to fight Summer with Winter/everyone else, and he and Sasha’s romance, and everyone else’s drama, and rescue missions, and people dying, and it all ends with the final showdown battle of Summer versus the Winter Resistance, which is basically every other Quadrant.

Rise and Fall- Quick Summary

Alek Thoreaut lives in a world where everything is balanced. The four Season Quadrants are run collectively by each set of Superiors, and higher power is handed off to the next Season in the circle every Solstice or Equinox. Everything was as it should have been. Until Summer made its move on Fall. Caught in a burning world, Alek escapes his ravaged home with the help of his uncle, only to go into hiding. With his uncle’s return, Alek is thrown into a new life. One where he isn’t who he thought he was. One of rebellion. Resistance. Love. And with the help of his new-found friends in high places, Fall has a chance -a fighting chance- to rise again.

R.A. Casilao: So You Wanna Write Poetry?

manuscriptsandbourbon:

1. Carry a pen and paper with you. I know, writers say this a lot, but this is useful and there’s truth in it. When an idea occurs to you, you’ll need to have resources to jot them down. You won’t be able to memorize them. Believe me.

2. Learn vocabulary. That’s what the dictionaries are for….
